Readers Mine,

This evening has been rather fruitful. I finished Spanish In Your Face!. It was quite useful, and I got a bunch of vocabulary out of it. Lots of descriptive stuff and heaps of synonyms. I figure I'll need to go back frequently, but it was pretty good, and broken down nicely into themes.

I shall add it to my reading log which you'll find updated below:

2011 Reading Log:

  1. El Sueño del Celta - Vargas Llosa (es).
  2. Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov (en).
  3. Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief - Rick Riordan (en)
  4. The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini (en)
  5. Maudit soit le fleuve du temps - Per Petterson (fr) - had about 50 pages left, then left it on the plane. Sad. Gonna count it anyway.
  6. Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters - Rick Riordan (en)
  7. Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Titans Curse - Rick Riordan (en)
  8. Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Battle of the Labyrinth - Rick Riordan (en)

  10. Les neuf milliards de noms de dieu - Arthur C. Clarke (fr)
  11. Le Matin des Magiciens - Louis Pauwels & Jacques Bergier (fr)
  12. How to Learn Any Language - Barry Farber (en) - got my motivation back.
  13. Getting started in Consulting by Alan Weiss (en) Fully recommended, was a great read.
  14. Tifon - Joseph Conrad (es)
  15. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the
  16. American Dream - Hunter S. Thompson (en)
  17. The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger (en)
  18. The Call of the Wild by Jack London (en)
  19. The Book Thief - Markus Zusak(en)

  22. Spanish in Your Face!: The Only Book to Match 1,001 Smiles, Frowns, Laugh, and Gestures so You Learn to Live the Language by Luc Nisset and Mary McVey Gill (en/es)

I am a couple of hundred pages into:
A Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 3) by George R.R. Martin (en)

As you can see, I am well on my way to accomplishing the goal of 52books/weeks I set out to achieve.

Thar ye go.

I just finished reading the short story La noche boca arriba by Julio Cortázar. It was somewhat interesting.

What was more interesting was me remembering that someone (quite probably Tricours) singing the wonders of bablefishes instant translate addon for Firefox. So I used it for this text, and I must concur, it's mighty useful.

For those of you using firefox, go get it.

Language wise, I've been subjected to some intense french vocab related to suppliers and management this week. As I had another training which I completed successfully. Some jargon and what not which I didn't know.

That's a damn impressive reading list, I barely read that many books in English, let alone in other languages.

Keep up the excellent work!  Cool

Takes me ten minutes to get to Ternes. So ten minutes.

Also, as of tomorrow I've got some time off from trainings, and I'll use said time to reward myself with language learning.

Is this the list of books you have read or going to read?

In former case, how is Percy Jackson and the Olympians series? I didn't give it a try because it's Young Adult (though, this didn't stop me from reading Chronicles of Narnia, but then again, Narnia is a classic now), and I wasn't sure if it will interest me.

In latter case, don't start the 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series, after Wheel of Time, I prefer not to start series which isn't complete yet, and which the writer doesn't seem to be planning to finish any time soon.

Readers mine,

I've been busy recently, lots of French, a fair bit of new vocab, and generally a more formal usage of the language; needing to express complex **** I don't usually have the habit of expressing in French, so it's been useful in that regard.

Next week: SPANISH BABY YEAH!

Definately only those that I have read. I update when I've finished a book.

I enjoyed them, easy read and better written than Harry Potter etc. I enjoyed the Greek Mythology.

Yeah, but well they were available, and they were awesome. Though I will have to wait for the upcoming books, it'll give me time to stock up my library once I get to Sydney. I think I'm just going to ramraid a few second hand bookshops...

Readers mine,

No Spanish yet, I'm a bad bad boy. But I've been branching out into other realms of learning which I've been interested in for a while.

Accordingly, I read a book about value based investing, and today I read a book about old school calisthenics, I also tried out some of the exercises and realised just how unfit I am.

2011 Reading Log:

Readers mine,

So the weekend wasn't particularly productive for languagelearnery, I did get tanned and relaxed. I also read a book on the train. I bought 'Contes et Légendes des pays celtes' while I was in Brittany as well. For those of you who aren't aware, there's a relatively large celtique culture there, and the local language (subjugated by french) is Breton which is a celtique tongue. I like it cos my mums' side of the family can be traced back to some celtic clans in ireland. So bagpipes and whiskey make my blood sing.

In one of my previous posts I said:

I have infact found the solution in "Las venas abiertas de latinoamerica". Which I am a couple of hundred pages into as we speak. Seems to be pretty good and I am amazed at the ease with which I am reading it, especially taking into account the length of time it has been since I last used/read in Spanish.

Books in your native language(s) should count half.  Razz

Au contraire! Books in other languages should count double considering how much longer they take me.
